Making raised beds

Yesterday in the pouring rain in the Netherlands, today in a T-shirt in the sun on Saladou! We started with the building of three test-hugels (raised beds) next to where next month the poly tunnel will be built. A pile of tree trunks and branches on the bottom, then a layer of manure mixed with straw and humus as toplayer. During the building the wood was sprayed with water.

1. Stems and branches collected and manure fetched at neighbor farmer mr Taillant

2. Coarse fresh manure and older more fine manure on top…

Making raised beds

We have started making raised beds for our winter veggies. These beds will soon be inside, covered by a polytunnel. Fabulous summer crops and winter salads, and a wonderful early start to everything in the spring! Our neighbour Jan and his sons helped us setting up the beds: a layer of wood (branches, small stems), a layer of manure, a layer of cardboard and a final layer of earth. Mulches will follow soon to protect the soil from the harsh winter weather, to encourage worms and to help build a healthy soil structure.
